Stuttgart – Mercedes-Benz builds the world’s most desirable coupés – a claim which the Stuttgart-based car maker is underlining at the 2008 Paris Motor Show with its ConceptFASCINATION design study. This unique vehicle, whose innovative and unconventional proportions interpret the emotional appeal of a coupé in a new way, represents an exciting and intelligent combination of sporty and elegant design with stylish practicality. Wood, aluminium and smoked glass give a particularly exclusive look and feel to the luggage compartment which incorporates a refrigerated compartment and a humidor as well as offering a large load space. These attributes embody the two objectives of ConceptFASCINATION – to provide a high level of practical usability and to create a coupé which appeals to the heart with fast, thrilling lines. In developing this design study, Mercedes-Benz has given fresh impetus to the long-established (although now rarely seen) “shooting brake”, a vehicle category with its own distinctive charisma. Freed from the constraints of a specifications book, the designers have created an automotive sculpture with great aesthetic appeal which once again demonstrates Mercedes-Benz’s high level of design expertise.

ConceptFASCINATION is a unique jewel of compelling automotive design which is distinguished by its irresistibly dynamic lines yet still offers the benefits of a large luggage compartment. A particularly notable feature of the design is that the practical load space develops organically from the exciting and elegant lines of this lifestyle coupé, giving it its special charisma. Inside, the tone is set by fine, exceptional materials hand-crafted to the highest standard. Absolute perfection and attention to detail make this design study an incomparable gem which conveys at one and the same time a sense of sporty forward movement and elegance, savoir-vivre and exclusivity of the highest level.

Not content with just indulging the senses, the ConceptFASCINATION design study impresses with its technical underpinnings, too. These are drawn from the new E-Class and include the new four-cylinder diesel engine which features BlueTEC technology and develops 150 kW/ 204 hp from a displacement of 2.2 litres.

Dr Thomas Weber, Daimler AG board member with responsibility for Research and Development at Mercedes Benz Cars, said: “The show car not only demonstrates a fascinating, new design idiom, but - with our new, high-performance and economical diesel drive system using BlueTEC technology - shows that Mercedes-Benz vehicles will also set standards in the future in terms of sustainability as well as emotional appeal, driving pleasure and comfort.”

The New York Auto Show is always an important venue for Mercedes-Benz, which is really no surprise considering the prevalence of black S-Classes that roam the streets of the Big Apple.

With this in mind, Mercedes always manages to unveil something in NY that is not only important, but incredibly cool. This year it will be the 2010 E63 AMG, the high performance sibling of the E-Class.

Power increases just 11 ponies to 525hp and torque sits at an impressive 465 ft-lbs. The gains have been made on the same 6.2-liter V8 engine found in the previous model.

According to the report on WorldCarFans from German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, the 2010 E63 will get suspension modifications, a slightly wider track and a rear air suspension. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard equipment with large AMG brakes.

With the minimal power increase we do expect to see a noticeably lighter curb weight. It’s also entirely possible that the new E63 could feature direct-injection technology, which can not only be credited for the power increase but would also significantly reduce fuel consumption.

There was absolutely no doubt in the mind of Professor Bodo Buschmann, President of Mercedes customization specialist BRABUS, “Even in the face of the extreme rework that characterizes the vehicles at SEMA, we were going to stick firmly to our principles and go for a more practicable solution. Our GLKWidestar grabs attention with its stunning appearance, while at the same time, offering a high degree of everyday usability in all conditions.” And thus, it is fair to say that, among the four tuning competitors, the GLKWidestar represents the “European” solution. The SUV was conceived by development engineers on the basis of automotive pragmatism that stands by classic Mercedes-Benz characteristics. The Widestar is an interpretation of the GLKas an on-road machine with corner-hugging agility that also pays tribute to the high levels of refinement associated with Mercedes vehicles.

That doesn’t mean that the BRABUS GLK is merely a “good boy” among the SEMA stars. Far from it - one look is all it takes to capture the muscular stance of the Widestar bodyshell, which has been broadened by 50mm, incorporating beautifully integrated flared wheel arches that carry through to the front of the vehicle with distinctive air intake fins. Customised front and rear bumpers, LED daytime running lights, side skirts, a roof spoiler with LED lights (position lights) and all-new LED lighting units above the front windshield complete the reworked bodyshell. A custom paint process adds an unparalleled depth of lustre to the black paint finish. “It was an interesting challenge,” comments Ulrich Gauffrés, Head of Research and Development at BRABUS, “to bring even more fascination to the already distinctive GLK. Our Widestar underscores the characteristic edge of the original GLK-Class design.”

Admittedly, it’s been awhile since we’ve shown an eco-friendly car, but the BlueZero is just the vehicle to break that streak. What M-B had in mind when they designed this vehicle was to create an affordable, eco-conscious car that offered a multitude of platforms and was suitable for daily use. Enter the BlueZero. Keeping Mercedes’ sandwich floor concept in mind, the BlueZero’s structure allows for three different platforms to be realized: an E-Cell with battery, E-Cell plus with battery and gasoline, and an F-Cell with hydrogen. Without elaborating too much, the sandwich floor concept allows for the powertrain to move into cells in the floor in the event of a front-end collision. Such an innovative creation proved not only to be great for safety but also helped to create the universal platform you see here. From a design standpoint, not much is shared with other Benz models except the obligatory 3-pointed star in the center of the grille. A sweeping curve seems to be the defining look of the car, and starts right behind the front quarter panel begins low on the vehicle but finishes up by the beltline, near the back of the car. A lor of electric cars make a lot of bold claims, but this new Benz is relying on existing architecture, practical ideas, and strong support from confident clientele; we hope to see this in production soon.

Enough is never enough: This is the motto behind FAB DESIGN's extensive refinement treatment of the grand Mercedes coupe. The new wide body aerodynamic programm fits in harmony into the entire picture and gives the vehicule a more sporty appearance. The FAB DESIGN wide body front bumper forms a unit with the new wide front fenders and takes up the line guidance at the new CL. A big opening placed in the middle provides a lot of fresh air for the coolers. The left and right side intakes serve a lot of cooling for the brakes. Despite the enlargement of the fender the harmony and elegance of the basic CL is fully preserved. The front fender sideopenings behind the salient enlargements act as an additional cooling element. The lightly overstanding sideskirts at the door bottom edge, make the CL look not only sporty but also dynamical and stylish. The sporty and dynamic looking rear fender with the intakes provides a lot of ventilation for a sufficent cooling of the rear brake system.

The sophisticated and unique design of the rear bumper convert the CL next to the efficent aerodynamic also a breath taking optic. The shape of the lower section of the rear bumper produces an excellent downforce value.

The new shape of the four integrated slightly horizontal placed exhaust endpipes, is just another way to reflect the unique way of FAB DESIGN inspiration.

FAB DESIGN goes own ways also for the light alloy wheel. The 3-pces forged FAB DESIGN type 6 EVOLINE wheel fascinates through its own and athletically optic. The aluminium wheels look through the low bed particularly big, the wheels are completely painted in the car color (titanium brilliant grey). The visible chromed screws look technical and give a sporty finish. The front axle is fitted with wheels in dimensions of 10J x 20, the rear axle even with 12J x 20 inch. Dunlop Sportmax tires in the dimensions of 255/30 ZR 20 for the front axle and 305/25 ZR 20 for the rear axle, providing sufficient “Grip” by all speeds. Combined with the modificated suspension results in an indescribable curvening pleasure without influencing negatively the straight run.
